Consultation on the Implementation of the
Indigenous Languages Act
On June 21, 2019, the
Indigenous Languages Act
(Act) received Royal Assent. The overall purpose of the Act is to support the efforts of Indigenous peoples to reclaim, revitalize, maintain and strengthen Indigenous languages.
The Act requires the Government of Canada to consult and to provide meaningful opportunities for Indigenous governments and other Indigenous governing bodies and Indigenous organizations to collaborate in policy development related to its implementation. The Government of Canada is committed to ensuring that all voices have a chance to be heard and will consult and engage with Indigenous Elders, youth, children, persons with disabilities, women, men, gender-diverse persons and two-spirit persons across Canada.
This questionnaire is intended for all who wish to contribute to the reclamation, revitalization, maintenance and strengthening of Indigenous languages. Your responses will serve as input for the appointment of the Commissioner of Indigenous Languages and up to three Directors and the development of an Investment Framework for Indigenous Languages.
Participation in this questionnaire is voluntary and all responses will be kept strictly confidential. Information is collected for statistical purposes only and will not be used to identify respondents. When providing feedback, we request that you do not include personal information about yourself or others. If personal information is provided, provisions of the
Privacy Act
will be respected in the handling of the information.
If you would like more information about the questionnaire or are unable to access it electronically, please e-mail Canadian Heritage (
